MP3 is a trio led by Martin Pyne, known as a drummer and composer, but here spotlighting his work on his first instrument, the vibraphone. He is joined by guitarist Russell Jarrett and longtime collaborator Marianne Windham on double bass. Expect intimate, beguiling chamber jazz, as the trio draw you in to an exquisite and hypnotic sound world. The repertoire features radical reworkings of classic jazz tunes from the likes of Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and Paul Motian as well as a number of Martin’s own evocative compositions.
“One of this year’s most sumptuous, enchanting, and subtly involving recordings, the kind of record that quietly sneaks up on you then sucks you in like an anthropomorphic tornado. … genre effectively becomes meaningless. Just gorgeous, pure music. Softly, as in a morning sunrise."
Darren Berstein reviewing Martin’s album Ripples for New York’s Downtown Music Gallery.
