Aged eight, she was loaned a cello by her School, an instrument to uncover and convey this hidden musical potential, the same instrument she mastered when awarded a full scholarship to the renowned Chetham`s school of music in Manchester UK, playing amongst many music greats in their respective fields of devout mastery.
Receiving a thorough classical training over the subsequent ten years until 2003, before gaining a degree at the Royal Northern College of Music, reinforced the fundamentals of her musical basis and natural ability to perform. Accolades on the cello included performances for Yo Yo Ma, Steven Isserlis, and a concerto performance with the Halle Orchestra. |
SARA DOWLING demonstrates an expansive vocal range with an immense interchangeable emotional tone, reminiscent of the jazz greats Billie Holiday, Anita O’Day and Betty Carter.
At a young age her environment played a significant influence in her musical journey, swaying between her father’s record collection of Erroll Garner, Wynton Kelly and Bud Powell to the haunting melodies blaring from her mother’s radio of the great Arabic chanteuse Fairuz. She spent the early parts of her life in Oman experiencing great journeys through endless desert juxtaposed by years spent in Cornwall, with its dramatic coastline and unearthly green wilderness. Circumstances beyond her control put a stop to a promising career as a solo cellist and it wasn't until 2009 that Sara re-emerged, utilising her vocal abilities. She is known and respected for her interpretations of classic ballads leaving audiences spell bound as well as the energy and vigour with which she tackles the up tempo standards from the American Song Book. She has recently joined forces with the London Dance Orchestra undertaking the vocal complexities and might of 1930’s classics, and standards sung by her aspired vocalists.
