Espial
JOSEPHINE DAVIES tenor & soprano saxophones
MARTIN PYNE vibraphone & balafon
DAVID BEEBEE Fender Rhodes piano
7:30 p.m. Friday 3 MAY
Espial is an exciting new trio featuring saxophonist Josephine Davies, keyboard player David Beebee and vibraphonist and drummer Martin Pyne.
This creative new band builds on the bewitching sound world of vibraphone and Fender Rhodes piano - a unique combination explored on Beebee and Pyne’s acclaimed album Ripples.
Espial’s brand new album “The Act Of Noticing” releases on Discus Music in May. The tracks are by turn lyrical, powerful, tender, delicate, mysterious and groovy. Much of the music is completely improvised, but evocative composed themes also make an appearance. This is music that is both intimate and intense.
Reviewing RIpples Darren Bergstein of New York’s Downtown Music Gallery wrote “Ostensibly ‘jazz’, but you’d be hard-pressed to adopt that term here, as the duo stretch the definition of such pat categorizations to the point where genre effectively becomes meaningless. Just gorgeous, pure music. Softly, as in a morning sunrise."
Josephine Davies was named instrumentalist of the year in the 2019 Parliamentary Jazz Awards.
“What makes the album so striking is Davies' refusal to abandon melody even as she lets go of defined changes. Her irrepressible tunefulness not only leads the improvisers in fruitful directions but also offers the listener an open door into the music.”
Downbeat Magazine
Martin Pyne’s solo album “Spirits Of Absent Dancers” was named in the Guardian as one of the best albums of 2020.
“In terms of percussion improvisation, try to imagine something that runs from the Zen sound-painting of Frank Perry to the light swing of Billy Higgins. There’s nothing loud, nothing showy, nothing esoteric. Just a delight in the deft touch of a stick, a mallet, a finger or a wire brush on metal, skin or wood, and in the process of transforming sound into a sense of movement.”
Reviewing David Beebee’s album Gaya, Jazzwise magazine said:
“Beebee is brilliant... his scores are world class. It is always exciting to come across a major new talent”
